It seems like every other day I get freaked out and/or sad about this crazy season. I'm currently both freaked out and sad. Not a good combination. But I'll soldier on. Come Christmas eve, I'll be hanging with my wonderful family, and will have resigned myself to whatever state of completeness (or incompleteness, as the case may be) my knitted gifts will be in.
The winter issue of Knitty is up, and there are some wonderful things in there. I especially like the sweaters in this issue. I immediately went to the accesories, though, since Amy told me that they had received so many submissions of accesories, that was why my Charleston hat & scarf were not accepted. There's one hat in there that is constructed the same way mine is: a strip with a cable that is joined into a ring, then stitches picked up to make the top of the hat and shape the crown. I think mine is cuter (not that I'm biased or anything), but the one that was published is an easier cable pattern.
Anyway, here's my hat and scarf, you can be the judge:
PS - For those of you who have asked about me publishing the pattern on the blog, since I'm still hoping to sell the pattern I don't think I'm going to "officially" offer it on here. But if you'd like a copy of the pattern, leave me a comment or send me an e-mail and I'll send it to you when I finish formatting it. (And if you've already left a comment asking me to publish it, I'll send it to you - you don't have to ask again.)
That is really cute! Are you going to perhaps offer the pattern on your site? (just a hint!)

Hi, I'm the designer of the other hat with the cabled brim. I love your version! And here I thought my method was original. :-)

hi Alexandra!
I'm sorry if I was sour grapes-ish. I'm not very good at taking rejection and can get competitive sometimes. Your hat is also really nice, and I agree with the blurb on the site that it would be a good first cable project.
And I'm sure neither one of us invented this idea! I did another hat like this earlier this year for Karabella. It may or may not be on their web site www.karabellayarns.com (last I checked, they hadn't put up any of their newer patterns, but that was a while ago.) I think it's a great construction - it's sort of unexpected to have a cable going horizontally.
I'm sure your hat will be very popular!

Oh, no, don't apologize. I agree that yours is cuter, so you're quite justified! I've seen Elsebeth Lavold use that construction, too, now that I think about it.

Alexandra pointed me to your site. Great minds are thinking alike! I just made a hat a couple of weeks ago w/very similar construction.

Good luck in publishing your pattern!

You are correct! Yours is cuter. Please send me the pattern if/when you are ready. Thanks.

Hey there - stopped by School Products today and picked up some of that gorgeous cashmere/silk to make a scarf for my dad. Daphne bought some, too. It was great seeing you this weekend! By the way, have you read Annie Modesitt's blog today?

Alison, I think your hat and scarf set is stunning. I love cables but can't imagine knitting a whole sweater. This would be an excellent way to get introduced to cables. It's hard to decide whether to fringe or not, both versions look good. I hope it's not too late to ask for a copy of the pattern. If not, please send one to me too.

I came upon your blog by chance and was delighted to see your scarf and hat set. You are a wonderful designer. Please add me to the list for the pattern. Thanks, Shannon.

Best wishes,
Lisa

Oh Alison! I love this set - great cables - and would be so happy to have the pattern when it's ready to go.

I love the hat and scarf set. I just finished the knitty pattern hat. It was quite fun to knit. I made it in a sage green color for my SO. I was thinking that your hat would be great for a girl. I would do love to have the pattern.I find that I love doing cables and would like something a little "fancier"!

Very cute set!!! I would've loved to see it in Knitty. ;) Would you please include me in your pattern distribution too? :)

Wow. You were willing to offer that for free??? It's both classy AND fresh. I've seen that kind of cap and scarf in fancy boutiques here this winter. Very chic, and deserving of publication in any print mag!

I'd love this pattern! I just finished a cabled band hat that I modified from a child's size and it was lots of fun. I love your "matching set" and would like to knit it. There's a mitten pattern in "Folk Mittens" with the same (or similar) pattern across the top. They'd look great with your set.
